Most of us judge our progress by one number on a bathroom scale. The problem is that the scale can't tell the difference between the fat you want to lose and the muscle you worked hard to build. You could drop five pounds and actually be moving backwards, or hold steady for a month while your body changes for the better. At Commonwealth Nutrition in Ross Township, we use the InBody 270 to show you what your weight is actually made of, so you can stop guessing and start making decisions based on real data.
What Is the InBody 270?
The InBody 270 is a body composition analyzer used by clinics, gyms, and wellness professionals around the world. You stand on the platform barefoot, hold the hand grips, and stay still for about 30 seconds. That's it. No dunk tanks, no pinching calipers, no changing clothes.
The machine sends a very low, safe electrical current through your body at several frequencies. Muscle holds a lot of water and lets the current pass easily, while fat resists it. By measuring that resistance through eight contact points on your hands and feet, the InBody builds a detailed picture of your body, section by section.
What Your Results Sheet Shows
You walk away with a printed results sheet that breaks down:
- Skeletal muscle mass, the muscle you build through training
- Body fat mass and percent body fat
- Total body water
- Segmental analysis of muscle and fat in each arm, each leg, and your trunk
- Basal metabolic rate, an estimate of how many calories your body burns at rest
- Your InBody Score, a simple overall snapshot of your body composition
The sheet also tracks your history across your last several scans, so you can see trends over time instead of one isolated moment.
How We Use It to Help You Reach Your Goals
A scan on its own is just numbers. What matters is what you do with them. When you come into our store on Babcock Boulevard, we sit down with you and walk through your results in plain language.
If your goal is fat loss, we look at whether you're losing fat while holding onto muscle. If you're trying to build strength, we check that your muscle mass is climbing where it should be. If one side of your body is carrying noticeably more muscle than the other, that's worth knowing too, especially if you're coming back from an injury.
From there, we can recommend practical next steps. That might mean adjusting your daily protein intake, picking the right recovery support, or simply rescanning in a few weeks to confirm you're on track. The goal is never to sell you more products. It's to help you spend your effort and money on the things that move your numbers.

Working With Doctors and Trainers Across Greater Pittsburgh
We don't see ourselves as a standalone stop. Commonwealth Nutrition partners with doctors' offices and personal trainers throughout the greater Pittsburgh region, from the North Hills to the city and beyond, so the people guiding your health are working from the same information.
A trainer can send clients our way for a baseline scan before starting a new program, then use follow-up scans to fine-tune workouts. One example is our partnership with Dynamicx Gym in McCandless, where members can stop in for complimentary InBody scans. Medical providers can use the data to support conversations about weight management, metabolic health, and healthy aging. When your doctor, your trainer, and your nutrition plan are all looking at the same results, progress tends to come faster and with fewer surprises.
InBody Scans and GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications have become a common tool for weight management, and many people see significant results on the scale. But there's a catch worth paying attention to. Because these medications reduce appetite, it's easy to under-eat protein, and some research suggests that up to 40 percent of weight lost during GLP-1 therapy can come from lean mass when nutrition and exercise aren't addressed.
Losing muscle can slow your metabolism and make it harder to keep weight off long term. That's where regular InBody scans help. A baseline scan before or early in treatment, followed by check-ins every few weeks, shows whether you're losing fat, muscle, or both. If muscle starts trending down, you and your provider can respond early with more protein, added strength training, or other adjustments. Always talk with your prescribing provider about changes to your plan, and bring your InBody results with you. They make that conversation much more productive.
